Rare Phenomenon! White-Purple “Princess Crab” Spotted at Phanoen Thung before Conservation Area Closure

Before the annual tourist season closure of Phanoen Thung in Kaeng Krachan National Park, an impressive event occurred when park officers captured photos of the rare “Princess Crab” or “Sirinath Crab.” This unique species, found in waterfalls, is making its final appearance for the year with its stunning white and purple colors.

This discovery is a precious gift from nature, just before the park announces the closure of tourism and camping from August 1st to October 31st each year.

A Special Encounter at Phanoen Thung

The head of Kaeng Krachan National Park, Mr. Mongkol Chaiyaphakdee, shared that park rangers stationed at Phanoen Thung were fortunate enough to capture images of this rare crab. The appearance of the Princess Crab is not only a rare animal sighting but also an indicator of the ecosystem’s health. The presence of such a rare species signifies the excellent environmental quality of the park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with remarkable biodiversity.

A Symbol of Biodiversity Conservation

The Princess Crab, with its striking appearance, is a symbol of the park’s commitment to preserving its ecosystems. Its shell and claws are pure white, contrasting with the purple-black legs, eyes, and mouth. Fully grown, the crab measures about 9 to 25 millimeters in width. What’s more significant is that this crab species was granted royal permission to bear the name of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, in honor of her opening of the Chulalongkorn University Natural History Museum on February 24, 1988.

The Call to Preserve Our World Heritage

The discovery of this magnificent crab serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our World Heritage forests. It reminds us that we all have a responsibility to safeguard these natural treasures for future generations.
