Instead of the usual destinations and itineraries, why not embark on journeys that will take you to far-flung corners of the globe where you’ll get to see and experience incredible things one can only dream of. If you’re looking for a new great adventure travel experience, here is a list of some of the most unique and exciting destinations to visit on your next vacation:
Trekking across Iceland
From breathtaking glaciers and vibrant greenery to stunning lagoons and even whales and elephants, the Icelandic scene is incredibly diverse. Although you can practically cross the whole island from one side to another in less than 24 hours, it would still be best to take at least 7 days to experience it all. Some of the most popular spots to visit are Akureyri, famous for botanical gardens and whale watching, and Gullfoss waterfalls, along with Vík í Mýrdal further south, home to black sandy beaches, and Selfoss, known for warm pools and Blue Lagoons. The best time to visit is in the spring and summer, but you still need a good pair of bootsto keep you cosy and comfortable during your Icelandic trekking endeavours.
Exploring the caves of New Zealand
Keen travellers can find endless adventure experiences in Waitomo, a labyrinth of caves hidden beneath fern-covered hills and waterfalls. The 30-million-year-old caves are lit by thousands of glow worms that cling to the walls and the ceiling, where you can take a guided tour, including a boat ride illuminated by these bioluminescent bugs. There are also dedicated ‘black water rafting’ tours, which involve floating along underground rivers in an inflatable rubber ring, or you can simply head above ground for a relaxing walk through the bush.
Scuba diving in Australia
From colourful coral reefs and tropical waters in the north to vast kelp forests in the south, Australia truly offers it all. Most foreign divers usually associate this beautiful country with the Great Barrier Reef, and for a good reason. This incredible ecosystem is the world’s largest natural feature, even visible from space and home to over 2000 unique bird, fish and marine mammal species. But considering its staggering size, there is a lot more to explore in Australia beyond the reef. Adelaide is famous for its multitude of shipwrecks, South West Rocks are known for their shark action, and Exmouth is raved for Ningaloo reef, where whale shark and manta ray sightings are a common occurrence. So, take some time off, equip yourself with the best scuba diving gear and explore all the incredible diving spots Australia has to offer.
Rafting through Zambia
Even though it’s mainly visited on the road to Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall in the world, Livingstone is also an adventure seeker’s paradise. The rapids crashing out of the Falls provide some of the world’s best whitewater rafting, which you can often combine with a camping trip or a nature safari. You can also go canoeing, abseiling, ziplining, or even bungee jumping over the bridge spanning between Zambia and Zimbabwe. But the most exciting experience of all might be taking a dip in the Devil’s Pool. This shallow and calm pool is located quite literally just a few inches from the edge of the top of the waterfall, where rainbows form in the mist.
Go for a run around Kilimanjaro
Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is undoubtedly a must for any adventure traveller, but if you’ve already ticked a trek to the highest point in Africa off your bucket list, then perhaps going on a marathon around it is your next big challenge. The Kilimanjaro Stage Run gives trail runners a chance to see the mountain, as well as the surrounding countryside, in a way that most travellers don’t get to experience. Over the course of six days, participants will run 260km, completely on foot, passing through remote villages seldom visited by foreigners. Of course, the trip isn’t for the faint of heart, as it requires good physical condition and the ability to push yourself outside of your comfort zone, but the rewards are truly life-changing.
If you’ve made a resolution to embark on new adventures and expand your horizons, then add some of these incredible destinations to your travel bucket list, and have a trip of a lifetime.
